The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.

The vote against the student leader reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while addressing a college in Utah.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice confirmed that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.

The letter accused the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The president-elect had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
